The Journey of My Hair: Mistakes, Adversity, and Unexpected Beauty
From my transformative journey to my latest hair disaster, I've learned valuable lessons about taking care of my hair and the importance of self-esteem and self-love.
My Hair Journey: From Disappointment to Appreciation
Growing long hair didn't suit my face and personality. I found it heavy, hot, and a hassle to style. Now I prefer my short pixie cut which makes me feel more confident and comfortable. However, my biggest hair disaster was not appreciating and taking proper care of my hair.
I have curly, mostly unruly hair due to a combination of my Puerto Rican mother and Black American father. From a young age, I wanted to change my features, feeling that my nose was too wide, my lips too big, and my hair too wild. Despite my mother's efforts to instill pride in how I looked, I never fully believed her.
It wasn't until I was 20 that I decided to embrace my natural hair by going without relaxing it. This decision led to inquisitive questions from those around me about my hair care methods. While my methods have varied, I now appreciate the vibrancy of my natural hair. Even when I eventually died it, I still managed to fall in love with its beauty. This journey has taught me the importance of consistency and self-care.
Lesson from the Haircut gone Wrong
The biggest hair disaster happened when a man I loved rejected me, claiming I was immature. Heartbroken but determined to move forward, I decided to get my hair cut. My intention was to look more serious and mature. Instead, the haircut turned out to be disastrous. My friends started making fun of me, suggesting I get a better haircut or asking if I even combed my hair. This experience was a wake-up call about the impact of insecurities and the need to let go of external judgments.
Reflections and Lessons Learned
Rejection and adversity have been the catalysts for my self-discovery and personal growth. They have taught me valuable lessons about self-love, self-care, and the importance of embracing my unique features.
I hope my story can inspire others to cherish and take pride in their natural hair and unique qualities. My journey is far from over, but I believe that by understanding and accepting ourselves, we can overcome any hair disaster or life challenge.
